After several months of communication among committee members from the Botanical Society of America and Academia Sinica, five American botanists were invited to participate in a botanical expedition in China with Chinese colleagues. Between August 15 and November 15, 1980, Bruce Bartholomew of the California Academy of Sciences, David E. Boufford of the Harvard University Herbaria, Theodore R. Dudley of the National Arboretum, James L. Luteyn of the New York Botanical Garden, and Stephen A. Spongberg of the Arnold Arboretum, visited botanical institutes and gardens and spent six weeks collecting in the field. The expedition was led by S.C. Sun, director of the Wuhan Institute of Botany, and collected 2,085 specimens. Of these, 1,715 were vascular plants. Complete sets of the vascular plants were deposited at the Wuhan Institute of Botany and at the Arnold Arboretum.
The expedition was funded by the Academia Sinica. Travel support for the American botanists was provided by the National Geographic Society. Support for follow-up work was provided by the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta.
