Elmer Drew Merrill papers

Scope and Content

The collection contains letters pertaining to an attempt to get copies of Vols. 1 and 2 of the "Palau Tropical Biological Station Studies" in 1946, a manuscript for "An Index to Rafinesque's Published Technical Names for the Cellular Cryptogams" by E. D. Merrill, and a manuscript "A Partial List of the Present Locations of Authentically Named William Roxburgh's Phanerogams Many Being Isotypes or Perhaps Holotypes of his Indian and Malayan Species." Also included, bank statement and canceled checks from November 1934.

Biography

Elmer Drew Merrill worked for the U.S. government in the Philippines, 1902-1923, and became a major figure in Philippine botany. He was director of the New York Botanic Garden from 1931-1935. At the time of these letters, he was director of the Arnold Arboretum, a post he held from 1937 to July 31, 1946. (for more information, see Taxon 6: 89-101)
