Archaeology--Awards - Round mold, probably lead, used to create the cast from which the award medal is made. Each piece is one side of the medal.
Established in 1950, the Alfred Vincent Kidder Award for Achievement in American Archaeology was given every three years to an outstanding archaeologist specializing in the archaeology of the Americas. The award has been given alternately to specialists in Mesoamerican archaeology and the archaeology of the Southwestern region, areas that were both central to the pioneering and exemplary work of A.V. Kidder. This award, presented by the American Anthropological Association and selected by its Archeology Division, is now given every two years.
Tatiana Prosouriakoff, an eminent archaeologist well-known for her artistic renderings of Mayan sites, was also the fifth recipient of the award in 1962.
Recto depicts two Mayan figures, probably deities or rulers, surrounded by Mayan iconography, as well as the text "The Alfred Vincent Kidder Award"; verso depicts a Pueblo Indian landscape, as well as the text "for Achievement in American Archaeology."
