No finding aid has been created for this collection. - Jeannette Robinson Murphy (1865-1946) was an early researcher in the area of African-American song. Although she worked to preserve music from the slave tradition, her writing also reflected the blatant racism of her time and place in American culture. Helen of Manchester, born Helena Zimmerman (1878-1971) was the daughter of Eugene Zimmerman, a wealthy Cincinnati businessman. In 1900 she married the Earl of Manchester, divorcing him in 1931, before marrying the 10th Earl of Kintore in 1937. Jeannette Robinson Murphy's presentation inscription was to the elder Dowager Duchess of Manchester, born Consuelo Yznaga, who died in 1909, and whose sheet music collection was presumably bound together and possibly expanded by her daughter-in-law, Helena.
