General note: Gongxian cave temples: a set of 5 Buddhist grottoes (dated between 517-539), located 8 kms north of Gongxian (midway between Luoyang and Zhengzhou), Henan province. ; Hua sheng: aupapadaka (aupapaduka)-- metamorphosis, associated with direct 'birth' by metamorphosis; also means incarnation, a Buddhist term meaning the incarnate avatara of a deity. ; Gong yang tian: deva-- the celestial Bodhisattvas. The posture of the image--kneeling in adoration--suggests that this figure is one of the "attendant deity" bodhisattva images.
