- Contains medical and personal accounts of Dr. Ebenezer Roby (1701-1772). The entries were primarily written in the 1750s and record Roby’s medical visits in a number of communities west of Boston. His accounts include a charge to the province of Massachusetts in 1760 for treating soldiers who contracted smallpox during the French and Indian War. Roby's services included delivering emetics and cathartics, bleeding patients, dressing wounds, and extracting teeth. He accepted payment in cash or payment-in-kind. Roby had several African American and Native American patients. Other patients included the Hon. Judge Sewall, likely Massachusetts Chief Justice Stephen Sewall (1702-1760). His personal accounts include payment to jurist Edmund Trowbridge (1709-1793) related to several legal disputes in which Roby was involved. Roby's name is also sometimes spelled as Ebenezer Robie.
