- Collection consists of a 112-page farmer's daybook detailing financial transactions from 1760 through 1785. Entries contain the customer's name and place of residence, the item purchased, and amount charged. Most of the entries record the sale of cider, but Stearns also sold timber, hay, calfskin, lamb, and pork. Names of customers included John Vassall, Archibald McNeil, William Greenleaf, Stephen Greenleaf, Thomas Fayerweather, and Cornelius Waldo. He also sold cider to Harvard College students and Hollis Chair of Divinity Edward Wigglesworth (1732-1794). There are a number of entries for goods provided to officers while the Continental Army was camped in Cambridge in 1775, including charges to Mr. Austin for pork and cider bought for General George Washington. In 1780, there are payments from Stearns to Timothy Wellington for dressing skins; and a charge to an African American named Bristol, who lived by Fort Hill, for malt. The volume also contains the date of Samuel Stearns' marriage and his children's birth dates.
