Copyright. Copyright in the papers created by the Sociologists for Women in Society is held by the Sociologists for Women in Society. Should the Sociologists for Women in Society cease to exist, copyright is transferred to the President and Fellows of Harvard College for the Schlesinger Library. Copyright in other papers in the collection may be held by their authors, or the authors' heirs or assigns.
Copying. Papers may be copied in accordance with the library's usual procedures.

18 linear feet ((18 cartons) plus 2 photograph folders, electronic records)The Sociologists for Women in Society records include papers of the American Sociological Association women's caucus; correspondence and editorial files of the newsletter; secretary's correspondence, reports, and minutes; membership and mailing lists; American Sociological Association and Sociologists for Women in Society candidate responses; and other records.
The records were screened by archivists Susan Earle and Marilyn Morgan; documents deemed to be confidential by Sociologists for Women in Society, and those to which access would provide an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy, were removed and closed pending processing and further review. The records are unprocessed, but available for research unless otherwise noted.
The Sociologists for Women in Society's web site is being captured periodically as part of Harvard University Library's Web Archive Collection service (WAX); searchable archived versions of the web site will be available through this finding aid in 2010.
HISTORY
Sociologists for Women in Society grew out of a women's caucus, founded by Alice Rossi, within the American Sociological Association. Organized in 1971, the organization promotes professional opportunities for women in sociology, explores the contributions that sociologists can and should make in the investigation and humanization of current sex roles, serves as a watchdog to the American Sociological Association Council, runs a job market service, and published the SWS Newsletter (1971-April 1979), and SWS Network (July 1979-May 1986). In 1986 it began publishing SWS Network News, and in 1987, the journal Gender and Society.
