Access. Collection is open for research. Cartons 1-8 were closed until January 1, 2007, and need to be screened before use. Cartons 9-14 and box 15 have been screened by library staff, and documents access to which would constitute an unwarranted invasion of privacy have been placed in red sleeves and temporarily restricted for the times specified. Red sleeves and their contents must be pulled by library staff before research use.

14.21 linear feet (14 cartons, 1/2 file box)Collection includes published and unpublished work, lectures, and material documenting professional activities, and records concerning her tenure case. Folder headings are Shirley Nuss's, with additions in brackets by archivist Susan Earle. Many folders are heavily annotated, presumably by Nuss.
BIOGRAPHY
A graduate in sociology of the University of Colorado (B.A. 1969, M.A. 1975, Ph.D. 1975), Shirley A. Nuss (1944- ) was an assistant professor at Wayne State University where she became involved in a well known tenure case, which was supported by the American Association of University Professors and Sociologists for Women in Society. An expert on the status of women in third world countries, Nuss worked for many years with the United Nations agencies and governments in South Asia to design, evaluate, and implement national survey programs to gather data on women. She also served as a research consultant for the World Conference of the U.N. Decade for Women, 1979-1980.
