BIOGRAPHY

Harriet Taylor Upton was born in Ravenna, Ohio. Upon her father's election to Congress in 1880, she moved to Washington, where she developed a close acquaintance with national Republican leaders and came in contact with leading suffragists. In 1890 Upton joined the National American Woman Suffrage Association, serving as treasurer from 1894 to 1910. In addition, she was president of the Ohio Woman Suffrage Association (1899-1908 and 1911-1920), and edited Progress, a monthly suffrage paper (1902-1910). After the passage of the 19th Amendment, Upton was vice-chairman of the Republican National Committee for four years. She retired from public life in 1931. For further biographical information, see Notable American Women, 1607-1950 (Cambridge, Mass., 1971).
