Rothman in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Ph.D. at Brandeis University. Providing detailed descriptions of intimate relationships between women and men from 1770 to 1900, Rothman uses case studies, including some of well-known people, to illustrate different concepts of love, courtship, engagement and marriage in the United States. Exploring all phases of intimate relationships in this period, she also provides an historical context for the evolution of some of the traditional rituals and customs associated with love and marriage: e.g., the honeymoon, and wedding rings. She examines the expectations of couples as to how marriage would affect them in relation to what in fact occurred, and the extent to which these expectations were imposed by family and society.
