3.96 linear feet ((9+1/2 file boxes) plus 1 volume, 1 oversize folder)The papers of Inez Haynes Gillmore contain diaries, literary notebooks, and an autobiography. The papers document Gillmore's suffrage work, labor contacts in California, travels in Europe, and interactions with literary personalities in the United States and abroad. A diary from 1916 documents 9 months spent abroad during World War I. Also included is a collection of Christmas cards received by the Irwins between 1924 and 1945. The volume Heterodoxy to Marie (Marie Jenney Howe) contains pictures and signatures of many literary personages.
BIOGRAPHY
A writer, Inez Haynes Gillmore Irwin, was active in the women's suffrage movement, the first fiction editor of Max Eastman's periodical, The Masses, one of the original members of the feminist society, Heterodoxy, and a feminist historian. She served in leadership roles in various professional writers' associations and chaired the board of directors of the World Center for Women's Archives.
