This collection consists of Sarah Ernestine Howard's letters to her parents while she was a student and resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital. There is also a small collection of letters from Howard's brother, Charles P. Howard, and father, Herbert B. Howard, to her mother, Margaret P. Howard. Howard's letters to her parents describe courses and exams, professors, clinical work, social life, relations with fellow students, male and female, her health, the impact of World War I on medicine, and her responsibilities as a resident and house officer.

BIOGRAPHY

Sarah Ernestine Howard, physician, grew up in a medical family. Her mother, Margaret Emily (Pagelson) Howard, was a doctor and her father, Herbert B. Howard, was director of the Massachusetts General Hospital and the first director of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. Howard was graduated from Wellesley College in 1911 and entered Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1913. She was House Officer and Assistant in Medicine, 1917-1919, and was an intern at the Massachusetts General Hospital, 1919-1921.
