Providing detailed descriptions of family life, Horn uses the Blackwell family to illustrate the importance of familial bonds. She examines the Blackwell family from 1815 to 1912 and explores the relationship between it and the larger society.
Horn devotes a major portion of her dissertation to prominent Blackwell women: Elizabeth Blackwell, Emily Blackwell, Antoinette (Brown) Blackwell, and Alice Stone Blackwell.
BIOGRAPHY
Margo Horn, a social historian specializing in the history of women, the family and the history of medicine, received an MA and PhD in History from Tufts University. She has taught in the Stanford History Department since 1985 and has been awarded fellowships by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and the Commonwealth Fund. She is the author of Before It's Too Late: The Child Guidance Movement in the United States, 1922-1945.
