Family Ties: The Blackwells, A Study in the Dynamics of Family Life in Nineteenth Century America was written by Margo Horn in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a PhD at Tufts University. Providing detailed descriptions of family life, Horn uses the Blackwell family to illustrate the importance of familial bonds. She examines the Blackwell family from 1815 to 1912 and explores the relationship between it and the larger society.

Horn devotes a major portion of her dissertation to prominent Blackwell women: Elizabeth Blackwell, Emily Blackwell, Antoinette (Brown) Blackwell, and Alice Stone Blackwell.
