The collection consists of personal letters from Harriet Ford Griswold to family and friends (manuscript and typescript carbon copies) describing her life in Cambridge and in Washington and the legal and professional activities of her husband Erwin Griswold, Dean of the Harvard Law School, 1946-1967, and Solicitor General, 1967-1973. Additionally, there are letters to Griswold, letters from Erwin Griswold to Marjorie Alberts, and clippings and photographs of Harriet and Erwin Griswold.

BIOGRAPHY

Harriet Ford Griswold, civic worker, received her AB from Stanford in 1928 and married Erwin Griswold in 1931. Griswold contracted polio in 1939 and thereafter was active in promoting programs for the handicapped. She traveled widely and worked in a voluntary capacity for many organizations. She was trustee of the Bay State Rehabilitation Clinic, adviser to the Junior League of Boston on issues relating to the handicapped, member of HEW's National Vocational Rehabilitation Advisory Committee, the Women's Committee of the President, 1972, and the Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. She was delegate to the White House Conference on Aging, 1971, member of the Lawyers' Wives of D.C. and of the Justices' Wives Group. She was in addition, children's librarian, lecturer, author and book reviewer.
