.42 linear feet (1 file box)The Helen Temple Cooke papers contain Cooke's college records, several articles and papers, a notebook (1882-1892), material giving the history of the Dana Hall School, and letters from Laura Spencer Porter Pope. Also included are three diaries (1858-1866) of Mary Foster Bardwell (born September 2, 1800). The diaries give a day by day account of the daily life of the family, personal items, and events in Walpole, New Hampshire. There are comments on the Civil War and the work of the Soldiers Aid Society. Also included are accounts of trips to visit a daughter, Sarah, in Decorah, Iowa, in 1862 and 1866.
BIOGRAPHY
Helen Temple Cooke was born in Rutland, Vermont, April 13, 1865. She was the daughter of Edmond Foster Cooke and Mary Ann Bardwell, born January 6, 1826. Cooke's grandfather Otis Bardwell was first married to Abigail Foster (1799-1835), who was the mother of all of his children, including Mary Ann Bardwell (Cooke's mother). Otis Bardwell's second wife was Mary Foster (Abigail Foster's sister). She was born in 1800 and died in 1875.
From 1882-1894, Helen Temple Cooke conducted a private school in Rutland. From 1894-1899, Helen Temple Cooke was a special student at Wellesley College. In 1899 Helen Temple Cooke became principal of Dana Hall School, Wellesley Massachusetts. She died April 12, 1955.
