This material was collected by Helen Maley Hefferan in the early 1940s, probably for a chapter in a proposed book by Catharine W. McCulloch about eminent Illinois women. It includes correspondence with and biographical sketches by and about fifteen women educators in Illinois.

BIOGRAPHY

Helen (Maley) Hefferan was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1870, the daughter of Thomas E. Maley and Sarah T. (Gibbons) Maley. She was educated at the Chicago Normal School and the University of Chicago; in 1892 she married William Stephen Hefferan, a Chicago lawyer. They had three children: William S. Jr., Thomas E.M., and Helen M.

Hefferan taught at the Chicago Normal School for seven years as a professional training teacher. She was a life member of the National Congress of Mothers and president of a number of parents' and educational associations during her life.
