HISTORY

Formed in 1969, the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) was the first national gathering of grassroots activists advocating the repeal of state abortion laws. Originally named the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws, its mission was to provide an information clearinghouse for efforts to repeal restrictive state laws. Upon the decriminalization of abortion with the landmark Roe v. Wade decision of the United States Supreme Court in 1973, NARAL changed the words for which its acronym stood and opened a national office in Washington, D.C. Its affiliates primary goals were to track legislation, to lobby for reproductive rights at the state and federal levels, and to compile annual guides to inform voters of their congressional delegations voting record.
