Scope and Contents

The records include correspondence, reports, financial records, membership lists, histories of the association and of the divisions, and scrapbooks showing the varied aspects of the work of the organization. Included are some papers of the Associated Country Women of the World, the United States Liaison Committee, and the Country Women's Council, U.S.A. Records received between 1955 and 1967 were processed circa 1967. Records received between 1970 and 1972 were added to the finding aid in 1973, and follow the arrangement of the original folder list; they begin with #198.

HISTORY

The Woman's National Farm and Garden Association was established in 1914 to connect women from around the country who shared a love of gardening and agriculture. Louisa King, the main force behind the Woman's National Farm and Garden Association's founding, served as president (1914-1920), and, "during her presidency the broad purposes of the organization found expression in education and scholarship; the setting of high marketing standards and in conservation. It also saw the establishment of Woman's Land Army Units (The Farmerettes) of World War I fame." Today, the Woman's National Farm and Garden Association is "an environmental group comprised of branches, garden clubs and special interest environmental organizations. We gather for an Annual Meeting to share ideas on growth, program speakers and activities, learn about new environmental issues and seal friendships with other organizations and their members."
