.21 linear feet ((1/2 file box) plus 9 videotapes)The collection documents two symposia convened at the 1979 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS): "Feminism and the Philosophy of Science" and "Women and Scientific Research." Organized by philosopher Sandra Harding and sociologist Susan Leigh Star, these sessions preceded by some years the emergence of what Harding later referred to as "the science question in feminism." They marked an early moment when feminists entered an elite scientific forum and claimed a place in the wider conversation about how scientific knowledges are produced. According to Linden, those who participated in and documented the symposia regarded the very fact of their presence and the interest the program generated as acts of feminist subversion.

BIOGRAPHY
R. Ruth Linden is a sociologist who specializes in the areas of women's health, the politics of technomedicine, and the Holocaust. She is the author of Making Stories, Making Selves: Feminist Reflections on the Holocaust (1993), which received the Helen Hooven Santmyer Prize in women's studies, and Against Sadomasochism: a Radical Feminist Analysis (1982). She is associate dean of the Graduate School for Holistic Studies at John F. Kennedy University in Orinda, California.
