Series I, Television and video appearances, ca.1970-2000 includes Friedan in interviews and biographies, giving talks, as well as commentaries by Friedan inserted within more general programs on the topics of women's history and aging. Items are listed in chronological order. There is no reel 1.

Series II, Speeches and lectures, 1987-1999 includes Friedan's speeches and lectures given at universities, conferences, the National Press Club, and Veteran Feminists of America awards ceremonies. Items are listed in chronological order.

Series III, Symposia, 1989-2006 includes Women, Men and Media symposia on specific topics related to the media's treatment of women, coverage of gender issues, and women's representation in broadcast media; the exception is DVD-34, disc 5, which is a panel about Friedan's impact on the feminist movement.

BIOGRAPHY

Feminist, activist, and author Betty Goldstein Friedan (1921-2006) helped found the National Organization for Women (NOW), and served as its first president (1966-1970). Her first book, The Feminine Mystique, was published in 1963. Afterwards, Friedan quickly became a leading advocate for change in the status of women in the United States. Her subsequent books included It Changed My Life (1976), The Second Stage (1981), and The Fountain of Age (1993). Friedan was active in many feminist and political organizations, taught at several universities, lectured widely, and published numerous articles on gender and aging related issues until her death.

These audiovisual materials were given to the Schlesinger Library by Betty Friedan and Marlene Sanders from 1987 through 2007.
