.21 linear feet (1/2 file box)This collection contains family correspondence, 1856-1859, of Sarah Ellen Browne (nicknamed Nellie) while a student at the school for girls conducted by Elizabeth and Louis Agassiz in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Most of the correspondence is between Nellie and her mother, but a few letters from her father (Albert Gallatin Browne, Sr.) and younger sister (Alice), as well as three letters from her older brother (Albert, Jr.) to his mother, are also included. Nellie's letters describe her social life; friends and relatives; course of study; clothing needs; health; homesickness; and religion. The letters to Nellie give much news of family members (especially of Albert, Jr. and his experiences as a war correspondent for the New York Tribune covering General Johnston's Utah Expedition, 1857-1858); and advice on what type of person to become, deportment, dress, and the importance of studying.
In addition to the original letters, there is information on the Browne family and typed transcripts of excerpts with notes by Nellie's niece, Sarah Eden Browne Chamberlin. Not all of the letters have been transcribed. Undated letters have been left as arranged by Sarah Eden Browne Chamberlin.
BIOGRAPHY
Sarah Ellen (Nellie) Browne was the daughter of Sarah Smith Cox Browne and Albert Gallatin Browne, Sr. She attended a school for girls conducted by Elizabeth and Louis Agassiz in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1856-1859.
