2.42 linear feet (2 cartons, 1 file box)The bulk of this collection consists of papers of Katharine Louisa Smith Hill, mainly family correspondence, with some business and other correspondence as well as writings, drawings, diary pages, and notes. The collection also includes earlier family papers, most of them of the Ledyard, Childs and related families, from whom Hill was descended through her mother. These include personal and business correspondence, legal and financial documents, biographical materials, and writings. These are numerous letters between female friends and relatives dating from the first half of the 19th century.
BIOGRAPHY
Katharine Louisa (Smith) Hill was the daughter of Augustus William Smith (1802-1866) and Catharine Rachel (Childs) Smith. Her father was the professor of mathematics of the founding faculty of Wesleyan University and became the fifth president of Wesleyan in 1852. Katharine Louisa Smith Hill married Walter Nickerson Hill, a civilian research chemist for the United States Navy, in 1877; he was killed in an explosion in New Jersey in 1884. As a widow with three small children, Hill settled in Newport, Rhode Island, where she had relatives, where she taught private school, and was an active church member and director of the Newport Historical Society.
