2.71 linear feet ((6+1/2 file boxes) plus 1 oversize folder, 2 photograph folders)This collection includes juvenile diaries, writings, and school papers, 1947-1956; letters from Finland during an AFS (American Field Service) trip, 1955; college papers and diary entries, some of which were kept for a freshman English course, 1956-1958; letters from Susan Delattre (and later Roland Delattre) to her parents, 1955-1975; correspondence between Susan Delattre and Roland Delattre, 1958-1960; and correspondence between Susan Delattre and others, 1956-1960. Folder headings in quotation marks are those of the donor. Susan Delattre often wrote weekly to her parents, and her letters detail the intellectual and social life of a college student and, in subsequent years, the daily life of a young mother and spouse. The correspondence between Susan Delattre and Roland Delattre documents their intellectual life as well as the growth of their relationship prior to their marriage.
BIOGRAPHY
Susan Sperry (Borman) Delattre was born on April 13, 1938, the daughter of Chauncey and Clara Borman. Born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she attended Stanford University before transferring to Barnard College, where she graduated in 1960. In June of that year she married Roland Andre Delattre, a graduate student at Yale University working on his Ph.D. in Christian ethics. As Roland Delattre taught at various universities, they lived in Oxford, Ohio (1963-1970); Missoula, Montana (1970-1971); Knoxville, Tennessee (1971-1973); and Minneapolis, Minnesota (1974- ). Over the years Susan Delattre taught elementary school and, while at the University of Tennessee, completed a graduate degree in dance. The couple had two children, Andre Pierre and Eric Lynn. They were divorced in 1983. Susan Delattre is the author, with Susan O'Halloran, of The Woman Who Lost Her Heart: A Tale of Reawakening (1992) and The Woman Who Found Her Voice: A Tale of Transforming (1997).
