Extent
1.88 linear feet (4+1/2 file boxes)In Series I most of the papers come from Abby Langdon Alger, a sister of Louisa Taylor Alger, and Louisa Rodgers Alger, a daughter of Louisa T. Alger. In Series II, the papers of the Rodgers-Meigs-Taylor families have their connection in the family of Louisa Taylor Alger before she was married. These include some letters of Minerva Denison Rodgers, the wife of Commodore John Rodgers (1773-1838). Series III, written from 1809-1812, includes the papers of the Jackson-Price-Hubbell families, related to the Alger family through Mrs. Philip L. Alger (Catharine E. Jackson), a daughter-in-law of Louisa T. Alger and Philip R. Alger. Because the seven families are related by a number of different marriages to each other, the records have generally been organized according to their original families. For this reason, Louisa Taylor Alger's correspondence has been included with Series II, rather than with Series I.
The Alger Family Papers covers the period from 1809 to 1969 and includes correspondence, diaries, biographical sketches, financial accounts, newsclippings and photographs.
BIOGRAPHY
The Alger Family papers comprise the papers of seven prominent New England and Pennsylvanian families: Alger, Rodgers, Meigs, Taylor, Jackson, Price, and Hubbell. The papers have their base in the family of Louisa Taylor Alger (1866-1962) and Philip Rounseville Alger (1859-1912).
