The Jacob Moreno papers consist of correspondence, patient records, financial records, and other related material from Beacon Hill Sanitarium (later Moreno Sanitarium and Moreno Institute), Beacon, New York; Moreno Research and Training Institutes, Beacon, New York, and several professional societies and international associations and congresses focused on the topics of sociometry (the study of group social connections) and psychodrama (a therapeutic practice that uses theatrical techniques, such as role reversal). The collection also includes correspondence and journal article manuscripts edited by Moreno for Beacon Publishing House, Beacon, New York (which published most of his work) and three of the journals he founded: Sociometry, Sociatry/Group Psychotherapy, and International Journal of Sociometry. There are also manuscripts and revisions, reprints, and correspondence relating to books authored by Moreno, and others he edited on psychotherapy and sociometry. Other papers include personal correspondence, audiotapes of sessions and workshops, clippings and scrapbooks, sociometric charts, certificates, and printed material.

The bulk of the collection dates from the last twenty-five years of Moreno’s life (1949-1974). The earliest records are from Moreno’s student days in Vienna, Austria (early 1910s). The collection also includes some correspondence (1930s-1970s) relating to Moreno’s work at the Moreno Sanitarium, Beacon, New York; Therapeutic Motion Picture Inc., Beacon, New York; Beacon Publishing House; the Moreno Institute (psychodramatic and sociometric research, training, and public demonstrations); the World Center of Psychodrama and Group Psychotherapy (international congresses and lecture tours); and the Moreno Consultation Center (psychiatric treatment). The papers consist largely of correspondence and manuscript materials (including typescripts and handwritten notes). There are also announcements, programs, registration forms, questionnaires, monographs, reprints, business and financial data, diaries, notebooks, records, documents, transcripts, mailing lists, printed matter, protocols, and patient records. There are also 35 items and cartons with oversize and bulk materials, including scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, tapes, films, personal effects, conference proceedings, journals, books, and archivists' files. The patient records and protocols from Beacon Hill and Moreno Sanitarium document the testing of his theories in therapeutic practice. Objects include bowties and Moreno’s honorary academic hood from the University of Barcelona, Spain. Archivists’ files include bibliographical materials as well as a list of the books and journals from Moreno’s library that were donated with the collection. (Some have been removed to the rare books collection).

Many items have handwritten notes on them.

The collection contains a significant amount of correspondence with Zerka Toeman Moreno, Moreno’s wife and professional colleague and collaborator. From 1949, Jacob and Zerka worked together personally and professionally. Zerka often wrote on behalf of Jacob, and no attempt has been made to differentiate her files or to include her name in the index, other than in obvious instances or for personal materials. This policy has been extended to others who acted or wrote on behalf of Moreno, including Ann Manzoeillo and other secretaries at Beacon, especially when dealing with routine administrative matters. The collection also includes materials pertaining to Zerka and Jacob’s son, Jonathan Moreno. Moreno’s correspondence is evidence of an extensive global network of over 2,000 contacts. The collection also includes many of the media types that Moreno used to spread his message, including films, audiotapes, and phonograph records.

Biographical Notes

Jacob L. Moreno (1889-1974), M.D., 1917, University of Vienna, Austria is known for his work developing the fields of psychodrama (a therapeutic practice that uses theatrical techniques, such as role reversal), group psychotherapy, and sociometry (the study of group social connections). He founded the Moreno Sanitarium, Beacon, New York (later Moreno Sanitarium and Moreno Institute); Therapeutic Motion Picture Inc., Beacon, New York; and other organizations and publications related to the therapeutic practice and teaching of psychodrama and related fields. Much of his work from about 1949 onwards was in collaboration with his third wife, Zerka T. Moreno (1917-2016).

Jacob Moreno-Levy (also referred to as Jacob L. Moreno or J. L. Moreno) was born Iacov Moreno Levi in Bucharest, Romania on May 20, 1892 to Nissim Levy Moreno and Pauline Wolf, and he grew up in Austria and Germany. He was identified as white in the 1930 U.S. Census, and he self-identified as Hebrew in his 1933 U.S. Petition for Citizenship. As a young man, Moreno developed an interest in philosophy and psychology and attended the University of Vienna, where he earned a medical degree in 1917. He developed an interest in spontaneous theater, developing a “Spontaneity Theater” group (Das Stegreiftheater, in German) in 1921. He also practiced psychiatry. Moreno immigrated to the United States in 1925 and eventually acquired an estate in Beacon, New York. He founded the Beacon Hill Sanitarium there in 1936 (later the Moreno Sanitarium and then the Moreno Institute), and the Therapeutic Theatre for Psychodrama. Within a few years, Moreno also established training institutes for workers interested in learning the techniques of psychodrama and sociometry. In 1957, after the Moreno Institute had become accredited to provide postgraduate training, an Academy of Psychodrama and Group Psychotherapy was added to the enterprise. Moreno also served as Adjunct Professor of Sociology at New York University, New York, New York in the 1950s and 1960s. Other teaching appointments are listed in the timeline.

Moreno wrote and edited books and articles, and he was active in many professional organizations. He directed the operation of Beacon House, Inc., Beacon, New York, the firm he established to publish journals and monographs devoted to the subjects of sociometry, group psychotherapy, and psychodrama, and served as its chief editor. In addition, he was an editor of large works, including Progress in Psychotherapy, Vols. I-V (1956-1960), The Sociometry Reader (1961), and The International Handbook of Group Psychotherapy (1966). Among the many articles and monographs that he authored are his books, Who Shall Survive? (1934), Words of the Father (1941), The Theatre of Spontaneity (1947), and Psychodrama, Vols. I–III (1946-1969). Moreno’s books were published in over fifteen languages. He also wrote manuscripts that were never published; these were mostly autobiographical in nature. Moreno was active in the American Psychiatric Association, the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry, the American and New York Medical Associations, and the American Sociological Association. He founded or led the American Sociometric Association (founding president, 1945), the American Society for Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama (founder, 1942), and the International Association of Group Psychotherapy (president). He also presided over international congresses of group psychotherapy, psychodrama, and sociometry in the last twenty years of his life.

Moreno married Beatrice (last name unknown) in 1928, and their marriage was annulled in 1931. Moreno became an American citizen in 1934, at which point he legally changed his name to Jacob Levy Moreno. His second marriage was to Florence Bridge, with whom he had a daughter, Regina Moreno, in 1939. In 1949, he married for the third time, to Celine Zerka Toeman (later known as Zerka T. Moreno). Zerka became his collaborator in the study and practice of psychodrama. Zerka and Jacob had a son, Jonathan Moreno. Psychodrama played a role in the upbringing of both Regina and Jonathan. Moreno died on May 15, 1974 in Beacon, New York following a stroke.

Processing Information

The collection was originally described by Joni Clouse and Christopher Kraus in 1986. The collection was re-processed by Jennifer Pelose and SPI, August 2007.

Charlotte Lellman revised the description in this finding aid in September 2020, to bring it into compliance with the Center for the History of Medicine’s Guidelines for Inclusive and Conscientious Description (2020). In particular, Lellman created a Scope and Content note and a Biographical Note, eliminating the laudatory tone of the previous description. The previous version of the finding aid is being maintained for transparency around the descriptive process.
