Overview
The Papers of Phillip Areeda consist of materials from his years as a professor at Harvard Law School, as counsel to Presidents Eisenhower and Ford, and as a teacher in the Program of Instruction for Lawyers. The collection also contains professional and personal correspondence, work related to his many publications, and materials from his days as an undergraduate and law student at Harvard.

This collection is open to the public, but is housed off-site at Harvard Depository and requires 2 business-days advance notice for retrieval. Parts of the collection are closed in accordance to Harvard University rules governing administrative and student records. Administrative records are closed for 50 years from date of creation, and student records are closed 80 years from date of creation. Restrictions are noted at the folder level. General access to these papers is governed by the rules and regulations of the Harvard Law School Library. Consult the Historical and Special Collections staff for further information.

1 collection (48 linear feet in 47 paige boxes and 2 hollinger boxes)The Phillip Areeda Papers span the years 1927 to 1995, with the bulk of the material being created between 1958 and 1995. Documents represent both Professor Areeda’s work at the Harvard Law School as well as service in the U.S. government. Material includes professional and personal correspondence, Harvard office records, lecture notes, book and article drafts, memos and audio-visual materials. In addition, there is a small amount of material from his time as a student at Harvard Law School.
Professor Areeda's work in the field of antitrust law is well documented in this collection by correspondence, teaching and writing notes. His work as a private consultant is also represented, though some of this material is restricted. Also of note is the scrapbook Areeda created that documents his career, with particular emphasis on his time spent as legal counsel to President Eisenhower.

This subseries contains Areeda's teaching materials for courses he taught at HLS from 1962 when he first became a professor, until his death in 1995. Some materials are stored in binders, to maintain his organization. The binders generally contain course outlines and support materials. Most of the material in boxes 4-8 are exams for his Antitrust and Contracts classes. There are also additional course materials and student papers. Some student material in this subseries is restricted.
- ___ Subseries B: Administrative Documents, 1987-1991.1987-1991.This subseries respresents Areeda'swork with the Harvrad Law School administration on facultyappointments and the Dean's Advisory Committee. All of these foldershave been restricted due to sensitive material; these have been notedbelow in the container list.
- ___Subseries C: Office Files, 1958-1995.1958-1995.Alphabetized files, presumably pulledfrom Areeda's file cabinet in his office at Harvard Law School. Thefiles represent personal correspondence with friends, family andcolleagues; collaborative work with colleagues; administrativematters; work with students. Some of the files have restrictedaccess; these have been noted below in the containerlist.

- ___ Subseries A: Oil Task Force, 1969-1980.1969-1980. Areeda served as the Executive Director of the President'sCabinet Task Force on Oil Import Control, starting in 1969. Thissubseries reflects his work on the task force and includes memos,reports, and correspondence. Some of the materials were left in theoriginal binders.
- ___ Subseries B: Transition Team, 1967-1968.1967-1968.After President Nixon was elected, Areeda served on theWhite House transition team to prepare Nixon's administration. Thuissubseries contains mostly memos from the transition team, thoughthere are also some photographs of Areeda.
- ___ Subseries C: Counsel to the President, 1953-1975.1953-1975.Areeda served as counsel to both Presidents Eisenhower andFord. This subseries primarily contains reports and correspondencefrom both administrations. Some folders are restricted due tosensitive material; these have been noted below in the containerlist.

- ___Subseries A: Personal, 1952-1984.1952-1984.This subseries contains threedistinct groups of personal correspondence as identified by Areeda.The correspondence is between Areeda and friends, colleagues andfamily. Each group is arranged alphabetically by lastname.
- ___Subseries B: Professional, 1959-1995.1959-1995.Most of the professionalcorrespondence is from Areeda's time as a professor at Harvard LawSchool. This subseries is arranged alphabetically by the recipient'sor sender's last name. Much of the correspondence between Areeda andformer students concerning letters of recommendation has beenrestricted; these folders have been noted below in the containerlist.

- ___Subseries A: Industry Studies, 1962-1994.1962-1994.This record group was created andidentified by Areeda. It contains correspondence, court materials,and background materials relating to numerous cases he argued orassisted with for various companies. This subseries is arrangedalphabetically.
- ___Subseries B: Cases/Research Materials, 1979-1995.1979-1995.This subseries contains morematerials for cases Areeda consulted on, in addition to researchmaterials. Since these files were not included in Areeda's IndustryStudies, it is unclear if these cases were of the same nature, orserved more as research materials for Areeda's publications. Some ofthe materials were left in their orginal binders to maintain Areeda'soriginal organization.
- ___Subseries C: Outlines, n.d. n.d. Outlines on various topics in antitrust law, such asderegulation, essential facilities, and monopolies. It is unclear ifAreeda created these outlines for written works, lectures, orboth.
- ___Subseries D: Writings and Collaborations, 1958-1994.1958-1994.This subseries contains publicationsand drafts written by Areeda. Also included are publications anddrafts written by others, but annotated by Areeda.
- ___Subseries E: Casebooks, 1965-1995.1965-1995.This subseries contains materialsrelating to Areeda's two seminal antitrust works: Antitrust Analysis and Antitrust Law: Cases, Notes, Questions, and Problems. Included are drafts, research files, and various publishededitions of both books. Materials originally in binders were leftintact to maintain Areeda's original organization.
- ___Subseries F: Talks, 1990-1993. 1990-1993. This small subseries contains materials relating to talksAreeda gave at the end of his career.
- Series V: Program of Instruction for Lawyers (PIL), 1961-1994. 1961-1994.
For thirty-threeyears Areeda was involved in the Program of Instruction for Lawyers(PIL), primarily through teaching antitrust classes each year. Thisseries contains both adminsitrative documents and teachingmaterials.
