Extent
1 collection (3 Paige boxes)This 14-volume collection of briefs, arguments, and court documents was collected by Judge E.S. Hammond (W.D. Tenn.) over the course of his career at the bar and on the bench.
The cases represented in the collection fall into three general categories: (1) cases argued by Hammond as a lawyer in private practice, (2) cases heard by Judge Hammond in Tennessee federal court, and subsequent procedural history of those cases, and (3) cases argued by colleagues, and cases forwarded to Hammond because the subject matter was of interest, or other reasons.
The earliest documents in the collection, transcripts of fifteen 1843 Supreme Court cases, fall into the third category. Of cases in that category argued by Hammond's colleagues, one David D. Shelby figures prominently. The majority of cases originated in Hammond's native southeast, in the jurisdictions of the 5th or 6th Circuit courts of appeals.
Several documents are annotated by hand, and many bear a blue-penciled "Hammond" marking. The collection is organized alphabetically by party name; a few non-case materials are included at the end of Volume 14.
