1 boxesThis collection of papers relates to Eliot Tuckerman's activites as a trustee and attorney in private practice and as a Havard Law School alum who was active in the New York Harvard Club. While there are items that date as early as 1886, before Tuckerman had even entered law school, the bulk of the collection is made up of letters dating from 1906 to 1945.
Tuckerman's duties as a trustee in the estate of James A. Garlard, editor of New England Magazine and author of The Private Stable--Its Establishment, Management and Appointments generated the largest group of papers in this small collection. This correspondence, written between 1938 and 1940 and orginally bound, stems from the death of one of the original trustees and the subsequent estate accounting and necessary selection of a replacement trustee. It includes letters between Tuckerman and other lawyers, namely Sheppard & Seipp, various accountants, and Louise G. and Robert Emmet, trustees and beneficiaries in the Garland estate.
Personal correspondence, papers, and ephemera make up the remainder of the collection. Of some interest are those which relate to the furnishing of the "Class of 1894 Room" in the New York Havard Club, letters from Kenneth Rand, Secretary of the Class of 1894, during the compilation of the 51th Anniversary Harvard College Class Notes, and the biographical notes which Tuckerman wrote on his friend, Dr. William Ropes May.
Historical/Biographical Information
Eliot Tuckerman was born in New York City on March 12, 1872, the son of Gustavus and Emily Goddard (Lamb) Tukerman. In 1915, Tuckerman married Mary Ludlow Powell Fowler in New York City. They had one daughter, Emily Lamb Tuckerman (Mrs. Henry Freeman Allen).
Tuckerman received his A.B. (cum laude) from Harvard College in 1894 and his LL.B (cum laude) from Harvard Law School in 1897. He was accepted into the bar in 1898 and by 1899, Tuckerman was working with the firm of Evarts, Choate & Beaman in New York City. A lawyer's ledger (HLS MS 524) records that by 1947, Tuckerman had succeded Clifford A. Hand's New York law firm and what was Hand's firm had become Jones, Bleeker & Tuckerman.
