6 boxesThe Papers of Andrew Wylie (1814-1905) span the years 1854 to 1886. They include correspondence; legal and financial documents; notes; memoranda; transcripts; and newspaper clippings.
The Papers relate to Andrew Wylie's legal practice and to his work as a Judge of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia. Attorney's papers (1854-1859) consist of correspondence with clients and prospective clients. Judge Wylie apparently specialized in financial litigation, and the letters reflect his clients' business problems. Letters are chronological in sequence, and were originally pasted in three separate letter books. All letters are incoming mail; there are no copies of outgoing letters.
The judicial papers include some of Judge Wylie's legal opinions in cases of public interest, trial notes, drafts, briefs, memoranda, notes on authorities, and correspondence relating to these cases. Some of the more interesting cases in which Judge Wylie wrote for the Court and which are represented in these Papers are United States v. Baker (1864) and the so-called Star-Route Trial (1883).

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The Papers of Andrew Wylie, attorney and judge, were presented to the Harvard Law School Library as a gift by Judge Wylie's grandson, Mr. Craig Wylie, editor, Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston. The papers were transferred over a span of years, the last transfer being made on December 26, 1973.
