Gordon Ireland papers

Overview

This collection consists of materials relating to Ireland's education at Harvard and Harvard Law School, his work as legal counsel for various Cuban sugar companies, particularly Cuban Cane Sugar Corporation, 1925-1928, teaching career at Harvard Law School, 1929-1932, and at Portia Law School, Calvin Coolidge College, and Calvin Coolidge Law School, all in Boston, 1939-1941, the establishment of Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, his work with the Bureau of International Research of Harvard University and Radcliffe College, and publication of his books, Boundaries, Possessions and Conflicts in South America (1938), and Boundaries, Possessions, and Conflicts in Central and North America and the Caribbean (1941).

The papers are divided into four SERIES:

  1. SERIES I: Harvard student, teacher, alumnus, 1897to 1944 1897to 1944

    Boxes 1-1 to 1-6

    Consists of a large number of small sequences which relate toProfessor Ireland's student days at Harvard (1898 to 1905), theperiod of his membership on the Harvard Law School Faculty as anAssistant Professor (1929 to 1932), the establishment of the FletcherSchool of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and membership insocial clubs and organizations to which he belonged.

  2. SERIES II: Bureau of International Research of HarvardUniversity and Radcliffe College, 1934 to1941 1934 to1941

    Boxes 1-7 to 2-4

    Consists of correspondence (1935 to 1940) relating to ProfessorIreland's connection with the Bureau of International Research ofHarvard University and Radcliffe College and with the publication ofhis two "Boundaries" books.
