1 collection (68 boxes and 3 Paige boxes)The Papers of Judge Braucher (1916-1981), which were deposited with the Harvard Law School Library in 1971, span the years 1936-1971, with the bulk of the material covering the years 1940-1970.
The Papers consist of correspondence, teaching notes, student notes, drafts, outlines, syllabi, memoranda, reports, legal documents, legislative documents, court documents, news clippings, unbound printed items, and financial records. Much of the material is in photo-duplicated form.
The Braucher Papers deal with Judge Braucher's professional background and career up to the time of his appointment as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts (January 1971). They include his notes as a student at the Harvard Law School; his teaching notes for his various courses at the Harvard Law School and other institutions which he visited; manuscripts of and correspondence about his professional writings and special lectureships; his work on the Statute of Fraud for the New York Law Revision Commission; his work as a reporter for the American Law Institute, especially his contributions to the Model Penal Code and the Restatement of Contracts; his work as a member of the Massachusetts Statutory Special Commission on Code of Ethics and the Massachusetts Attorney General Advisory Council on Conflict of Interests; and his work as a member of the National Commission on Uniform State Laws and as a Commissioner of the Massachusetts Commission on Uniform State Laws. The bulk of these Papers deals with this latter involvement as a Commissioner on Uniform State Laws, namely his contribution to the drafting of various uniform codes, especially the Uniform Commercial Code and the Uniform Consumer Credit Code.
There are also three manuscript boxes of material dealing with Judge Braucher's contribution to the National Commission on Consumer Finance of which he was Chairman in 1969 and 1970. Four manuscript boxes contain material on miscellaneous professional activities of Judge Braucher. There is little personal-biographical material included in these Papers, and all of the correspondence is professional in character. There are no extended correspondence series with any particular person.
