This collection contain papers collected by Leonard Wheeler, Jr., during and after his experience as assistant trial counsel at the trials of Nazi war criminals before the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg, Germany. The papers include trial briefs, memoranda, evidence and reports prepared by Wheeler and other members of the prosecution, as well as newspaper clippings and correspondence, and span the years 1945 to 1947.

Historical/Biographical Information

Leonard Wheeler, Jr. was born in 1901 in Worcester, Massachusetts and graduated from both Harvard College and Harvard Law School, where he was editor of the Law Review for two years. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, and later as Assistant Trial Counsel during the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals. In addition to processing war-related documents in the London office of the OCC (Office of Chief of Counsel), Wheeler was also responsible for preparing several reports used in the trial, such as "Suppression of the Christian Churches in Germany and in the Occupied Territories" (3-1).

He was a member and partner in the Boston firm of Goodwin, Procter from 1925 until his 1971 retirement in addition to serving in the leadership of several nonprofit organizations. Wheeler died in 1995.
