Papers of T. Franklin Currier, 1735 and 1852-1973

Overview

T. Franklin Currier (1873-1946) was a librarian in the Harvard College Library. His papers chiefly document his bibliographies on John Greenleaf Whittier and Oliver Wendell Holmes, but also include family papers with many photographs. Of particular note in this collection are three samplers embroidered by fourteen-year-old Ann Thomas in 1735.

Contains correspondence, research materials, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and other papers, mostly relating to Currier's bibliographies on John Greenleaf Whittier and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Also includes family correspondence and photographs. Of particular note in this collection are three samplers embroidered by fourteen-year-old Ann Thomas in 1735.

Biography

T. Franklin Currier, born February 26, 1873, Harvard A.B. 1894, was a librarian in Harvard College Library. He declined a career in teaching because of hearing problems; from 1894-1902 he was an assistant in the Catalog Department; from 1902-1940 he was in charge of cataloging. In 1913 he was made Assistant Librarian, and in 1937, Associate Librarian. He was a member of the American Library Association (ALA) Committee that published the 1908 ed. of the Cataloging Rules. He died Sept. 14, 1946.
