Negative and positive photostat copies and typescript transcripts of documents and printed materials (belonging to other institutions) concerning Increase Mather. This material was found in a box of items formerly owned by Professor Kenneth Ballard Murcock and these copies were possibly assembled by Murdock for his research on Increase Mather.

Biographical / Historical

Increase Mather (1639–1723) was a Puritan minister who was involved with the government of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Mather received his AB from Harvard in 1656, and an AM degree from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1658. He was the sixth president of Harvard College, serving as acting president from 1685 to 1686, rector from 1686 to 1692, and president from 1692 to 1701.

Kenneth Ballard Murdock (1895-1975) graduated from Harvard in 1916, taught English at Harvard and served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and produced a number of publications on Increase and Cotton Mather.
