27 salted paper prints in a contemporary album (Glamorgan, Wales?) [(31 x 27 cm) in case (33 x 29 cm.)], ca. 1850, bound in dark green pebble morocco sheep, covers and edges gilt, with ticket: Bound by Herbert Jones, Swansea.

Consists of landscapes, still life studies, and views of Penllergare, Wales, and Dorset taken by Llewelyn at his home Penllergare (near Glamorgan), Brynfield, and Melbury, seat of the 3rd Earl of Ilchester. Collection includes a print of Tintern Abbey that has been attributed to Nevil Story Maskelyne.

Most of the prints are captioned in manuscript and are somewhat faded, especially at the edges.

Biographical / Historical

John Dillwyn Llewelyn (1810-1882) was a pioneering Welsh amateur photographer.

Provenance:

The album came from Margam Hall, home of William Henry Fox Talbot's cousin, C. R. M. (Christopher Rice Mansel) Talbot.
