Series I consists of drawings and etchings of sea shells by antiquarian Samuel Lysons. Series II is a collection of drawings of Roman and early British antiquities, which was apparently collected during the first years of the Archaeological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland circa 1844 to 1867. Series III consists of miscellaneous drawings and a photograph from Fleming's collection, mostly of unknown significance. Series IV consists of three letters to or from members of the Lysons family.

Biographical / Historical

Lindsay Fleming was probably born in 1887, and became the owner of the Aldwick Grange estate in Aldwick, Sussex, England. He published several books through 1960 on antiquarian subjects, including Memoir and Select Letters of Samuel Lysons, V.P.R.S., V.P.S.A. 1763-1819 (Oxford: University Press, 1934). He gathered an extensive collection of material relating to Lysons.

Provenance

Fleming purchased the drawings in Series II from Bernard Halliday in 1958. Fleming's property was inherited by J.M.D. Fleming, and was auctioned by Sotheby & Co., London, on 1972 Mar. 23. Lot 326, comprising this entire collection, was sold to Mary Hyde (later Viscountess Eccles).
