Extent

.1 linear feet (1 volume in 1 box)

This commonplace book in scrapbook form bears the bookplate of Leonard L. Hartley, contains at least one related Hartley family document (pages 49 and perhaps 28), and contains other original material from the Milbanke family of North Yorkshire (pages 18-20 and 25). The material was probably collected and compiled by Hartley or an ancestor. Most of the scrapbook consists of unattributed riddles, puzzles, parodies, charades, and other humor dating from the 18th century. Some items are clipped from magazines, and many are in a variety of unknown manuscript hands. Elegies and epitaphs comprise most of the remainder. The inventory below describes only those items for which some kind of authorship or individual subject can be attributed. Among the most interesting original documents is a bill issued to puppet-master Harry Rowe (page 49).
