Alcott was an American philosopher of the New England Transcendentalist group, teacher, reformer, and father of the writer Louisa May Alcott.

  1. ABA indicates that a volume bears the signature of Amos Bronson Alcott. This signature usually appears at the top of the title-page in ink as "A. Bronson Alcott."
  2. B.A.L. refers to Jacob Blanck, Bibliography of American literature.
  3. FL indicates that a volume bears the inscription "Fruitlands Library," usually followed by the date "1843." This inscription usually appears inside the front cover in the hand of Frederic Wolsey Pratt.
