Biographical / Historical

George Holme (ca. 1676-1765) attended Queen's College, Oxford, receiving his B.A. in 1699 and M.A. in 1702. He served as chaplain to the English merchants at Algiers circa 1707 to 1709, before receiving his D.D. in 1718. From 1718 until his death in 1765, he served as the rector of Headley in Hampshire. Rev. Holme was succeeded briefly at Headley by Thomas Monkhouse (1726?-1793), another graduate of Queen's College. Giuseppe Marco Antonio Baretti (1719-1789) collaborated with William Huggins (1696-1761) of Headley on a 1755 translation of Lodovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, using Temple Henry Croker as an intermediary.

Biographical data on Holme and Monkhouse can be found in John Richard Magrath's The Queen's College (Oxford: Clarenden Press, 1921), 116.
