Biographical / Historical
William Huggins (1696-1761) of Headley Park in Hampshire, England was an early translator of Italian works into English. He published a translation of Lodovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso in 1757, and attempted a translation of Dante.

Provenance:
In 1952 Jan., some of these papers were sold by Robert Goulbourne Parker (1900-1979) of Browsholme Hall in Lancashire to Donald and Mary Hyde. An additional seven letters from Smollett to Huggins, with two copied Huggins letters and two related Huggins documents, descended in the Huggins family to Janet Heatley Blunt (1859-1950) of Adderbury Manor, Banbury by 1936. After her death in 1950, they passed into the hands of Lady Mabel Linda, who had them auctioned by Sotheby's, where they were purchased by Donald and Mary Hyde on 1952 May 20 (Lots 326 through 332). The provenance of the estate volume is unknown.

Separated Materials
Originally with this collection were two letters from Samuel Johnson to William Huggins, now in the Samuel Johnson Letters, MS Hyde 1, item (52). Also acquired by the Hydes with the Parker purchase were miscellaneous letters addressed to Giuseppe Baretti, George Holme, and Thomas Monkhouse, now cataloged as the Robert Goulbourne Parker Collection (MS Hyde 79).
