Processing Information
Throughout the years, these papers were consulted by many Emerson scholars, beginning with Cabot, Rusk, and Tolman, and the manuscripts have been extensively published or quoted from. Some of the papers were cataloged and inventoried. Before this index was completed, there existed four bound indexes, shelved in the Reading Room, to various groups of Emerson Papers.
The great bulk of papers remained uncataloged, although a system of classification had been devised. Numbers representing the name of the author, the type, and the date of the manuscript were assigned to most of the items in the collection (e.g. EM 349.P.1831.6.20 would be the classification number of an original poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson written on 20 June 1831). However there were no inventory, index, or catalog cards to the papers. The organization of the papers in the stacks was inadequate. They were grouped by type of manuscript (all poems together, all transcripts together, all miscellaneous items together), then filed first alphabetically by the initial letters of the author's name and then by numerical value of the rest of the classification number.
Work was undertaken in June 1981 to catalog and to make a single Index to all these hitherto "uncataloged" Emerson Family Papers. Any accessions number or old classification number formerly assigned to a manuscript in this Collection will follow its new description in this Index. The new call number of this Collection of Emerson Family Papers is bMS Am 1280.235. Each manuscript has been given an item number found in the left-hand margin opposite its new description. This item number should be used in any citations and, of course, when calling for the manuscript at the Reading Room desk.
To locate a particular manuscript readers should check the Table of Contents as well as the General Index of Names, at the end. Generally, original autograph manuscripts have been segregated from transcripts and photocopies, and manuscripts and letters generated during Ralph Waldo Emerson's lifetime (and earlier) have been separated from the papers of scholars and editors of Emerson, which are here called "Secondary material."
Susanne N. H. Currier, Cambridge, August 1983.

Repository Details
Part of the Houghton Library Repository
Houghton Library is Harvard College's principal repository for rare books and manuscripts, archives, and more. Houghton Library's collections represent the scope of human experience from ancient Egypt to twenty-first century Cambridge. With strengths primarily in North American and European history, literature, and culture, collections range in media from printed books and handwritten manuscripts to maps, drawings and paintings, prints, posters, photographs, film and audio recordings, and digital media, as well as costumes, theater props, and a wide range of other objects. Houghton Library has historically focused on collecting the written record of European and Eurocentric North American culture, yet it holds a large and diverse number of primary sources valuable for research on the languages, culture and history of indigenous peoples of the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania.
Houghton Library’s Reading Room is free and open to all who wish to use the library’s collections.
