These additional papers include correspondence between John Mason Brown and his wife Catherine Screven (Meredith) Brown created and received during Brown's lecture tours in the United States, letters received by Catherine Brown after John Mason Brown's death, and a small amount of other correspondence. Also included are manuscripts of Brown's last book published posthumously, The ordeal of a playwright: Robert E. Sherwood and the challenge of war as well as correspondence, reviews, and other materials relating to the book. Finally, there are photographs of John Mason and Catherine Brown and of unidentified people and places.

Biographical / Historical

Brown was an American author. He graduated from Harvard College in 1923. He was drama critic for the New York Evening Post (1929-1941) and New York World (1941-1942) and was a columnist and editor for Saturday Review (1944-1969). He served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy beginning in 1942 and took part in the invasions of Africa, Sicily, and Normandy. Brown died in 1969 after a short illness.
