180 photographsThe collection consists of 180 photographic prints on board mounts with mat frames ; gelatin silver ; 14 x 19 cm. Identifications and dates are handwritten on mat frames. Arranged alphabetically by country, Germany is the largest section with mostly architectural subjects and major cities. Bulgaria is next in size, depicting Sophia and other cities plus village life. Also includes images from Holland, Hungary, Latvia, Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia. Includes views of castles and palaces, churches, historic buildings, town halls and other government buildings, statues and monuments, street scenes, cityscapes, waterfronts, and other tourist attractions. Some images depict Methodist Episcopal churches, schools, and children's homes. Other images show people and various aspects of daily life, including folk dancers in Lovetch, Bulgaria, a synagogue and outdoor market in Prague, and a street vendor selling tea in Belgrade.
BIOGRAPHY
Although the donor attributed the photographs only to the name "Donohugh," in-house research leads us to believe that the photographer is Thomas Smith Donohugh. Born in 1875, Thomas S. Donohugh wrote for the Methodist Episcopal Church, Board of Foreign Missions. His work took him to Africa and, presumably, also to Central and Eastern Europe where he would have visited the Methodist Episcopal schools and churches shown in the photographs.
