12 boxesThis collection contains the records of Carleton Fisher and Dana Klotzle, who were the two executive directors of the Universalist Service Committee. Fisher was director from 1947 to 1953 and Klotzle was director from 1953 to 1961. The collection documents several programs which were jointly conducted by the Universalist and Unitarian Service Committees. These programs, which were designed to minister to the needs of children who were displaced by World War II, were administered by the International Refugee Organization of the United Nations. They included a program in Hungary designed to provide children with food, clothing, and other necessities; three programs for displaced children in Germany (Auermuhle, Veerssen, and Seessen); and a clothing distribution program in Holland. The collection also contains documentation related to the Universalist work camp program in the United States and in Europe, and the work of the Universalist Service Committee in Japan.
Biographical / Historical
In 1940 the Universalist Board of Trustees appointed an Emergency War Relief Committee to organize support for its Universalist War Relief Fund. The Universalist Service Committee, officially formed in 1945, succeeded the War Relief Committee.
