Extent
19 boxesThis collection contains sermons written by Haney, as well as a few of his other writings and some ministerial material. The sermons fall into two parts, the first being what he called his early sermons, which are filed chronologically from 1953-1971. The rest of the sermons are arranged alphabetically, covering the time span of 1969-2000. Most of the sermons are in envelopes which include orders of service, handwritten notes, correspondence, and clippings from newspapers and magazines. The ministerial materials contain thank you notes, funeral cards, wedding invitations, clippings, and one photograph of Haney baptizing a child.
Biographical / Historical
Robert William Haney (October 1, 1934-August 14, 2005) was born in Fall River, Massachusetts. He received his AB from Harvard College in 1952 and BD from Harvard Divinity School in 1959. He was ordained a Unitarian Universalist minister on January 10, 1960 by the Society of the First Church in Boston. Haney served the First and Second Church in Boston (1960-1981) and the Theodore Parker Unitarian Church in West Roxbury, Massachusetts from 1981 until his retirement in 2001, when he was named Minister Emeritus. Rev. Haney taught courses in religion, philosophy, and history at Emerson College from 1965 to 1975. He is the author of Comstockery in America: Patterns of Censorship and Control (1960).
