John and Samuel Reed account books

Scope and Contents

Collection consists of two account books kept by Weymouth, Massachusetts, shoemakers John Reed and his son Samuel Reed, dated 1740-1822. The first volume is a ledger of transactions related to making and mending shoes; John Reed's account date from 1740 to 1782, and Samuel Reed's accounts date from 1784 to circa 1807. Joseph Dyar was charged for making or mending shoes for Cato (Sequence 10) and John Pratt was billed in 1741 for shoes for Venes (Venus) (Sequence 14). There are also entries by Samuel Reed's son, William, from approximately 1818 to 1822. The second volume contains monthly records of professional and personal expenses, including trip to "see Mr. Savage's Panorama" and tooth extraction, from 1794 to 1796.

Misattribution note: As of April 2023, staff have determined that John and Samuel Reed were mistakenly attributed as engaging in making shoes for enslaved people. There is no evidence of this based on the content of the collection.
