.75 linear feet (2 boxes)The collection consists of the teaching and administrative records of Charles A. Bliss. These papers document his work at Harvard Business School and include materials relating to Management Control courses, the Middle Management program (now called Program for Management Development (PMD)) and the doctoral program. Included as well are records of various HBS faculty committees such as Economy, Library Policy, Instruction, Reports and Grading, Research, and Scholarship. In addition, the collection contains writings, newspaper clippings, correspondence and some biographical data.
Biographical / Historical
Charles A. Bliss was born in 1920. He earned his BA (1926) and MA (1929) from the University of California at Berkeley. He went on to teach statistics at Columbia University (1930-1937) before receiving his PhD from that institution in 1939. Professor Bliss joined the Harvard Business School faculty in 1937 and became full professor in 1946. In 1966, he was awarded the Royal Little Professorship at HBS. He was instrumental in shaping the school's first courses in management control and was one of the first faculty members of the Program for Management Development, a three month course for middle managers. He taught executive training courses at the University of Hawaii in the summers of 1975-1976 and helped establish the Turkish Institute of Business Administration in Istanbul. Professor Bliss retired from Harvard Business School in 1970 and died in 1977.
