The collection consists teaching records, research material and writings of Harvard Business School professor Richard E. Walton. Included in the teaching material are notes, plans and information collected for case studies. Much of Walton's research material focuses on innovation of labor-management practices of the steel industry in the United States. The material includes correspondence with union executives and members, field notes and interview transcriptions. Also included are reprints of publications and copies of papers presented by Walton at conferences.

Biographical Note:

Richard E. Walton was originally from Elkhart, Indiana. He studied political science at Purdue University and received his B.A. in 1953. As a Fulbright Scholar, he went toVictoria University in Wellington, New Zealand for a year in 1953. He then returned toPurdue University to complete his master’s degree in economics in 1954. He earned his DBA from the Harvard Business School in 1959.

He began his teaching career at the University of Maryland as an instructor in 1955.After receiving his DBA, Walton joined the Purdue faculty as a visiting associate professor in 1959, and he advanced to professor in 1965. He joined the Harvard BusinessSchool faculty as Professor of Business Administration in 1968. He was director of the Division of Research from 1969 to 1976, and he received the Jesse Isidor Straus Professorship in 1983.

Walton specialized in organizational change, conflict resolution, and behavioral science.His research focused on creating a more participative and “democratic” system ofworkforce management and decision making. He has authored or co-authored thirty-twobooks and written more than three dozen articles.
