6.75 linear feet (5 cartons, 1 box)Most materials in the collection pertain to Professor John V. Lintner's professional activities between 1940 and 1983, but a few folders contain documents going back as far as 1930. The collection contains little information about his personal life. Professor Lintner's activities as a consultant are documented in Series I, supplemented in some cases by correspondence in Series II. Speeches and writings in Series V are the best sources of information about Professor Lintner's scholarly contributions to the fields of business and economics, but should be used in conjunction with research files found in Series IV. Series VII illustrates the broad range of Professor Lintner's teaching activities, as well as different approaches taken by him when teaching similar subjects to different student populations.
Biographical Note:
John V. Lintner (1916-1983) was born in Kansas and received an AB in Economics from the University of Kansas in 1939, later receiving the MA and PhD in Economics from Harvard in 1942 and 1946 respectively. He taught Economics at the University of Kansas from 1939-1940, at Harvard University from 1941-1942 and 1964-1983, and at Harvard Business School (HBS) from 1943-1983.
Professor Lintner’s major fields of interest were economics and business conditions, capital markets, and corporation finance. He was Harvard's first George Gund Professor of Business and Economics, a joint appointment in HBS and Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The joint appointment was designed to promote mutually beneficial ties between business education and academic economics. In addition to his teaching activities at Harvard and HBS, Professor Lintner originated the PhD program in Business Economics at Harvard, was a consultant for many business corporations, financial institutions, and government agencies, and taught seminars at executive programs.
